My professional image PowerPoint presentation is over. I've shown slides of women in blue suits, beige blazers, and the sloping curves of cleavage on display. I've explained the difference between men's single-breasted and double-breasted jackets and (attempted to) justify whether men should wear wingtips, cap-toe oxfords, loafers, or some other shoe type on the job.

For years, decades -- maybe even since the invention of tights -- women wore them only with boots or shoes. Pairing peep-toe shoes or sandals with opaque tights was so obviously wrong that it rarely made lists of "don'ts." Such advice was unnecessary, like suggesting women avoid blouses with three sleeves or telling men not to hit the office with their neckties knotted in nooses.
Two years ago, several designers, including Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Jean Paul Gaultier, paired colored tights with sandals in runway shows. Actress Mischa Barton and model Kate Moss appeared with the look -- not caught by preying paparazzi on bad days, mind you, but actually posed in fashionable photographs.

If you are going to attempt this combination, allow me to point out a few guidlines. Wear this look with dark tights (preferably brown, navy, charcoal gray, and black), with shoes that are similar in color. You do not want the contrasting colors of your tights and shoes to vary significantly. However, do not match them perfectly (unless it is a black on black variation) because you could end up like Gwyneth below, as a metallic mess.
