11 Things You Might Not Know About Nylon
When I was a kid, I had an elderly widowed uncle who every Christmas bought each female in the family — and there were a lot of females in our family — three pairs of nylon stockings, nestled into pretty hosiery boxes from Wanamaker’s. We never really talked about how peculiar this was. (I mean, stockings are pretty much underwear.) But the invention of nylon by a DuPont scientist — it was patented 80 years ago today — changed the world, and clearly had a big impact on Uncle John, for whatever reason. (One theory was that he had a crush on a hot clerk in the hosiery department.) Here, in recognition of that 80th anniversary, are 11 things you might not know about nylon.

Technical Innovations Help Legwear Make Strides
Today’s hosiery, socks and leggings makers have made strides to distance themselves from the often uncomfortable, impractical and unfashionable options of yore. The legwear market is running with new technical and fabric innovations that keep pace with consumer demand for on-trend, performance-driven pieces that draw inspiration from every segment of the fashion industry, from apparel to footwear.
“Over the years, the fashion world has often had a love/hate relationship with legwear,” said Cathleen Moxham, lead design director for Hanes and L’eggs Hosiery. “At times, this category is described as ‘pantyhose’ and something that your grandmother or mother made you wear. However, today this concept is defying history.” For proof, she said, you need look no further than the Fall ’16 runway shows, where legwear was featured by brands like Prada, Gucci, Burberry and Chanel. Moxham cited Hanes Hosiery’s recent collaboration with designer Bibhu Mohapatra for New York Fashion Week as an example of the company’s own foray into the high-end arena.
Invista, one of the world’s largest integrated producers of fibers and polymers and owner of the Lycra brand, recently teamed with trend-forecasting agency Stijlinstituut Amsterdam to predict some of the must-have legwear trends for 2017/18.

Decorate your legs with colorful ninja stockings that offer style over stealth!
Okay, ninjas are supposed to keep out of sight, as you can tell from the fact that the very word “ninja” literally translates to something like “the hidden one.” But just take a look at these ninja tights currently being sold at the Edo Tokyo Museum in collaboration with their exhibit featuring the Sengoku Period in Japanese history, and we think you’ll agree that the fashion item is bound to do the opposite of keeping you incognito. (Hmm … the tights may allow the ladies wearing them to “sneak” their way into men’s hearts, though!)

Tights, Ranked
If you want to wear anything other than pants throughout the colder months, tights are an essential. But they’re also a real pain in the ass. Sometimes literally.
And tights are not cheap. Even the drugstore varieties, which often last only one wear, cost around $6 to $8. If you wear tights an average of three days a week during the fall and winter, that means the total cost could be over $600 for a single season! That’s more than most people spend on clothes for an entire year.
While a few women I spoke to have tights brands they swear by, most continue to search in vain for a pair that won't snag, run, or pull after only a few wears. As one reviewer put it, "I dread tights shopping because it's a Russian roulette of wasted money."
But does it have to be this way? Determined to find a pair I could comfortably recommend — a pair that looks good, keeps me reasonably warm, doesn’t feel like torture, lasts for several wears, and most importantly, doesn’t feel like lighting a pile of nylon money on fire — I tried on more than 40 pairs of tights made by 16 different brands (and convinced a dozen other women to join me).
The winning tights are listed by brand as well as category: opaque, semi-opaque, shaper and extended size, and best value. I’ve included winners as well as honorable mentions, because we don’t all have the same bodies, budgets, preferences, or pet peeves.
Each recommended pair has been worn at least twice and washed at least thrice (in a machine!) and come out okay. We tested for sheer pairs, too, but in this category there is truly no answer. Our tip: Go for the cheaper varieties and expect them to be one-time use, because even the expensive ones rip after one to two wears.
