Stockings have a long and illustrious long history dating back to the 12th century. Interestingly it was not an engineer, but a curate, who facilitated mass production. For in 1589 Reverend William Lee from the village of Calverton near Nottingham invented the framework knitting machine - it was suddenly possible, using the framework knitting machine, to produce stockings in quantity.
